Lighting Practice

Lighting Practice

A few lessons ago we practiced different lighting techniques, so we could start thinking about the sort of lighting we want to put in our thriller. Me, Courtney, Hyleana and Niamh worked in a group together because us 4 are going to do our thriller task together.

In this shot we attempted to create a 3 point full lighting. This lighting wasn't the most effective because we didn't have he proper equipment and big bright lights so we had to use the flashlights on our phone. Me, Niamh and Courtney got the flashlights on our phone to create his effect. I was stood to her right, Niamh was to the left, and Courtney was in front of her, and we was all shining our lights on her to try and get the 3 point lighting.as you can see, Hyleana was the focus in this picture.

This type of lighting is called Chiaroscuro lighting. In the shot, there is harsh lighting on my face, created again by the flash light on a member of my groups phone. To make the shot black and white, we used an effect on Courtney's iPhone. It's effective because the lighting makes my face stand out and makes it the centre of attention in the shot, as its a bright white colour compared o the dark background.

This lighting is artificial lighting. we turned the lights on in the room, but shut the blinds ensuring that no natural light was shining through. However, when we took the photo we seen that it just looks normal, so to ensure we had a blue-grey hue we added an effect to it from Courtney's phone called 'Hue'.

Here we used back lighting which means the lighting is behind the subject. Here is a silhouette of me looking out of the window, however, you can only see the outline of me and the scenery outside that I am looking at.

One Page Pitch

Deaden Hikes (anagram for ‘hide and seek’)
Genre: Horror Thriller

Length: 122 minutes (2 minutes opening)

 Target audience: 15-24 years old

Audience appeal:

  • Young characters- target audience can relate
  • Gives teenagers thrills, however not appropriate for children because of the graphic scenes
  • Want viewers to question our film as it addresses mental and gender issues

Tagline: you are your own worst enemy

What if you were close but never noticed the dangers around you? What if you were the victim to your own inner demons? What if?

The story synopsis: A runner goes for a jog to get rid of last night’s hangover. Meanwhile, in another part of the wood a distressed victim is on their last thread of life calling to anyone nearby. “Please, please, please” but how can you help someone who’s too far gone? When people say live your life like it’s your last, applied to Iyra Marshall on a day basis because she doesn’t remember most of their life. In her last moments she must decide the best way to spend it is to take a life, but who’s?

Statement of intent: We want to convey the issues of mental illness and bring the saying “we are our own worst enemies” to real life. We like the idea that throughout life we are fighting our inner demons and our main character clearly does that, but is not successful in winning against the little voice in her head.

Visual realisation: High contrast in many scenes. We want it to have a dark colour but enough that it doesn’t have a bad camera quality. We don’t want to alter the colour too much but rather make it more defined. It’s going to have an intense atmosphere to it so the audience will be able to feel some realism in it.

Finished Preliminary Task

Hello! You'll be glad to hear that we have have finally finished planning, filming and editing our preliminary task. I think Me, Lydia and Ben worked very well as a team, and I think our finished product has come out well to say its our first time doing anything like this. There are a few continuity errors, but we will only learn from them and try and take more notice of the specific things were doing next time to ensure we have less continuity errors.
Here are the jobs we did to make the video:

Camera Work
Rae Griffiths
Lydia Carline

Editing
Ben Locking
Rae and Lydia overlooked ben and did the occasional bit of editing.
